Avila Beach

Our frequently visited beach, the Avila Beach. The history of Avila Beach, California, dates back to the Chumash Native Americans, who inhabited the area for over 1,000 years. In 1842, a Mexican citizen named Miguel Avila was granted Rancho San Miguelito, which included the land that is now Avila Beach. The town was established in the latter half of the 19th century, when it served as the main shipping port for San Luis Obispo.

In the early 1870s, Luigi Marre built a honeymoon hotel in Avila Beach, and steamboats began bringing customers from San Francisco and Los Angeles. The town grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and by 1900 it had a population of over 1,000 people.

Avila Beach was a major oil shipping port from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. In 1990, the Point San Luis Lighthouse was built to help prevent shipping accidents in the area. During World War II, the beach and port were used for the Amphibious Training Base Morro Bay.

Today, Avila Beach is a popular tourist destination. The town has a working commercial fishing pier, extensive apple orchards, and beautiful beaches. Avila Beach is also home to the Point San Luis Lighthouse, the Avila Beach Historical Society Museum, and the Avila Valley Trail.
